Bay housing department under fire

A damning report by the National Council of Provinces says Nelson Mandela Bay‘s municipal housing department has collapsed as a result of internal administrative problems and lack of capacity to deliver efficient and effective services to the people.
The report, to be tabled in Parliament today, says that as a result of the municipality‘s non-delivery there is persistent discontent regarding delays or non-payment of service providers and contractors to the municipality. Sam Mazosiwe, who headed the NCOP delegation that visited the city last month, said the municipality would be closely monitored.
The visit was the second by the delegation this year.

500 000 houses will need to be built

Cape Town - As many as 500 000 houses will need to be built annually for government to meet its 2014 target of providing indigent South Africans with housing and do away with informal settlements.
The backlog in housing currently stands at “just above 2,4 million” units, the Department of Housing’s director-general, Itumeleng Kotsoane, said in Parliament recently, adding that the task facing his department was “rather huge”.Government has since 1994 made a R36 billion investment into low-cost housing and from just the past few years, has been building an average of about 250 000 units a year.
