Nigeria Needs 16million Houses
MTN Invests N117m In Housing Project
Nigeria requires additional 16 million houses to address the housing needs of her teeming population. This is the view of the National Director, Habitat for Humanity Nigeria, Mr Ezehiel Ojo while speaking at the handover ceremony of 100 housing units to the beneficiaries by MTN Nigeria Limited, held in New Karu, in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Ojo stated that the challenge before the country in terms of housing need is still the same. According to him, Nigeria currently has deficit of about 16 million units and the government cannot meet the demand alone.
Although, there are many developers in the country, Ojo said their houses are beyond the reach of low income earners. "It is interesting to note that the so-called low cost housing units in the country are outside the reach of the middle income group talk more of low income. They are not in any way affordable. Our two bedroom units is bout N1.5 million whereas similar products tagged low cost by the developers ranges from a minimum of N3.5 million to N6 million".
He observed that despite the huge cost, process of acquiring such houses is so difficult. He therefore asked: How many honest civil servants in Nigeria can afford a home of N3.5 million from the meager salary?
The director said his organisation has planned to build 1000 houses within three years. According to him, MTN has demonstrated to Nigeria and the world that they are not only interested in taking from the communities, but substantially give back to the society. "It is not an overstatement to say that MTN has made concrete, positive contributions to people’s lives and places", he said.
He therefore called on the private individuals, other corporate organisations and the government at various levels to emulate MTN Foundation and partner with his organisation in providing houses to the teeming population.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of MTN Foundation, Mrs Nonny Nduka-Eze said the need to assist Nigerians in owning a decent accommodation made the foundation to embark on the construction of low cost houses across the country.
She said that in 2006, the foundation, in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity International embarked on the construction of the 100 housing units of two bedrooms each in the local council to ease accommodation problems in the area.
"What you see is the outcome of the plunge we took back then with the support of our dependable partner, Habitat for Humanity; the beneficiaries and other stakeholders, including the various agencies of government who collaborated with us", she said.
According to her, the total investment on the MTN Foundation low –cost housing project is N117 million. "The cost of building materials of approximately N103 million out of the total investment of N117 million have converted to loans for the beneficiaries which they are expected to pay back over a period of fifteen years. The repaid funds are expected to be used to provide housing for other beneficiaries in future", she said.
Stating that the project was part of the telecom operator’s social responsibilities, Mrs Nduka-Eze called on other organisations to emulate MTN by giving back to the society.
