Affordable housing gap is key to wealth creation

Affordable housing gap is key to wealth creation
The provision of affordable housing in the so-called gap market in South Africa not only resulted in improved welfare and social cohesion, but was also an important facilitator of opportunities and wealth creation, according to a new study.
The research, conducted by a team led by UCT associate professor Francois Viruly, found that those who obtained homes in this sector moved beyond viewing them as a mere shelter but saw them as an asset, and the appreciation in the value of these assets stimulated entrepreneurship, job creation and access to higher levels of education. Soula Proxenos, the managing partner of International Housing Solutions (IHS), a global private equity investor that pioneered the financing of affordable housing projects in South Africa with a total value of almost R8 billion to date and commissioned the research, said housing in the affordable sector enabled a broadened role and became an asset that appreciated, stimul…

Lack of affordable housing forces poor into death traps - Economic TimesLack of affordable housing forces poor into death traps - Mumbai - IndiaMUMBAI: Aslamkhan Bhikankha sold his wife's jewellery and used all his savings to buy a flat in a Mumbai suburb which he now fears will soon be razed, leaving his family homeless.
The flat is in one of numerous illegal buildings in Mumbra that house poor migrant workers and face demolition by authorities over safety concerns after the collapse last week of a 7-storey block nearby in which 74 people died.

Alleviating poverty through housing

Image
Alleviating poverty through housing A South African company has reached the finals of a $1-million global challenge to solve the crisis of creating secure and affordable shelter for the poor. Over 100 presentations from around the world were submitted for the 2012 Hult Global Case Challenge, in the housing category – and just six, including PE’s Moladi Housing Technology, have made the cut. Patented by PE inventor and Moladi founder Hennie Botes, the Moladi model was presented at the regional final in London earlier this month, by Kingston University, and the team is now bound, next month, for the finals in New York.
Started by Hult international business school, with the aim of finding global solutions to alleviating poverty, the Hult challenge focuses on energy, education and housing. The competition is linked to the Clinton Global Initiative – and one of the judges in New York is scheduled to be the former US president himself. It’s a great feather in the cap for Moladi, and the compa…

Entrepreneur vs. Intrepreneur

Entrepreneur vs. IntrepreneurWhat can social intrapreneurs learn from social entrepreneurs?Wikipedia Definition:-
Entrepreneur: operates a business or businesses, taking on financial risk to do so
Intrapreneur: is the act of behaving like an entrepreneur while working within a large organization

Although the "new" word "Intrapreneur" is derived from the word "Entrepreneur" and the difference in wording seems slight, from E to I. In reality the two, Entrepreneur and Intrepreneur, are two very different individuals. More like "chalk and cheese" or oil and water" or “fish and bird” and both speak different languages.

Just because there is this “new title” for a “new product manager” namely " Intrapreneur” the individual is still a corporate thinking mind earning a pay packet. Whereas the true Entrepreneur takes on the financial risk.

Because some fish fly and some birds swim does not make the bird a fish or the fish a bird – This behaving l…

Namibia-Housing Crisis Confirmed

Namibia-Housing Crisis Confirmed
President Hifikepunye Pohamba yesterday lamented the critical housing situation that has made housing a luxury for many Namibians.

"It is a source of great concern that 16 percent of the population live in shacks or improvised housing units. This situation must be addressed and addressed speedily," Pohamba said yesterday during the launch of the 2011 Population and Housing Census Basic Report that indicates about 336 000 Namibians have been condemned to live in corrugated iron-sheet shack dwellings.

While the preliminary results of this latest census were already released last year, yesterday's launch contained a much more detailed depiction of the demographic and socio-economic status of the country. In terms of housing, which was singled out by President Pohamba, the census showed that 38 percent of Namibia's 2.1 million people live in traditional dwellings, 30 percent live in detached houses, 16 percent live in shacks and 8 percent …
